Mathias was educated in Germany and obtained an Engineering Degree (Dipl. Ing. agr.) from the Technical University of Munich in 1987. He received his Ph.D. in Biotechnology and Plant Breeding magna cum laude from the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, in 1992. In 1993, Mathias was recipient of the NSERC summit fellowship at Canada's National Research Council's Plant Biotechnology Institute in Saskatoon. Furthermore, he worked for nearly a decade as Senior Research Scientist for transnational companies in the life sciences industry.

Prior to joining Marks & Clerk, Mathias practiced several years in the Biotechnology / Pharmaceutical Patent Group of another Canadian IP firm.
